Types Of Employment

Definitions

– Full Time Employment – Full-time employment is employment in which a person works a minimum number of hours defined as such by their employer.

– Part-Time Employment – A part-time contract is a form of employment that carries fewer hours per week than a full-time job. Work is done in shifts. The shifts are often rotational. Jobs are considered part time if they are fewer than 30 hours per week.

– Freelance Employment – Self-Employment. Not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term.

  • Paid sick leave
  • Retirement plans
  • More benefits than other jobs

Cons

  • Difficult to handle things outside job
  • Higher work related stress
  • Less time off

Part-time Employment

Pros

  • Easier to handle things outside job
  • Helps keep your skills up to date if you are working towards a full time job outside work
  • Helps you determine if you want a full time position in the field you are working

Cons

  • Travel costs
  • Other expenses could consume most money earned
  • Part time hours change, so you may not get the amount of money you need each week

Freelance Employment 

Pros

  • Decide your own hours
  • Work where you like
  • You can claim business expenses
  • More control over your income
  • Choose who you work with

Cons

  • Possibility of irregular pay
  • Do your own bookkeeping, which can be stressful if you don’t know how to do it properly
  • No sick pay, annual leave or company benefits

This session was useful as it let me know what each type of employment is what the advantages and disadvantages of them are. This will help me decide what kind of employment I want to go into.
